European Heritage – shared experience and regional specificities
11 April @ 9:00 am - 13 April @ 5:30 pm EEST
How to achieve better integration of member states in respect to cultural heritage approach and practice, and how to level disparities? Is it possible to harness the ground-breaking recent developments in matters of heritage theory and policy achieved by European and EU structures, while not addressing the irregularities, the errant practices? What is regional specificity and what is lack of integration, when it comes to cultural heritage? In spite of their apparent lack of prominence, these are crucial issues to address in view of creating a balanced and consistent practice across Europe.
The conference wishes to address the more particular theme of quality in conservation, which is given the right attention within the European Year of Cultural Heritage. This subject needs to be investigated further and, moreover, put at the centre of Europe-wide exchanges, peer- learning and action, so as to achieve the desired level of integration, along with the safeguarding of defining regional or local specificities. A continuation and deepening of the quest for quality, initiated within the EYCH, will lead to the formulation of criteria and mechanisms to be eventually turned into Conclusions on this issue.
The Side Event organized in partnership with Europa Nostra under the title ‘Quality in Conservation’ – will complement the conference, based on a selection of the best European projects and actions, recently awarded the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / The Europa Nostra Awards. A session of presentations from the award winners will open the ground for professional and public debate. A public exhibition will create the background for the event.
