Minister Delegate for European Affairs George Ciamba meets with Gent Cakaj, minister-in-office for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania

Minister Delegate for European Affairs George Ciamba had a meeting today, June 10, 2019, with Gent Cakaj, minister-in-office for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania, who is visiting Romania.

During the talks, the two officials reviewed the state of Albania’s preparations for opening negotiations on EU accession, the state of bilateral relations, and developments in the Western Balkans region.

The Romanian dignitary reaffirmed our country’s firm support for Albania’s goal of accession to the European Union and conveyed Romania’s full willingness to provide technical assistance to Tirana in the process of accession to the EU, in specific fields of interest, based on Romania’s own experience.

He also welcomed the fact that bilateral economic relations are growing constantly and Romanian-Albanian cooperation within NATO, the OSCE and other international or regional organisations yields positive outcomes.

Minister Delegate George Ciamba encouraged Albanian authorities to continue the reform process and offered congratulations on progress made to date, acknowledged as such by the European Commission in the report published on May 29, 2019. In this context, he reminded the importance of ongoing internal dialogue and of commitment to the reform process by all political forces.

At the same time, the Romanian official reminded of Romania’s support for achieving progress in the EU enlargement process in the Western Balkans, which is one of Romania’s priorities during its Presidency of the EU Council.
