Minister Delegate for European Affairs George Ciamba had bilateral meetings with the German Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth, and with the Spanish Secretary of State for the European Union, Luis Marco Aguiriano Nalda, on March 12, 2019, in the margins of the Informal Meeting of Ministers and State Secretaries for European Affairs.
The talks with both counterparts highlighted the commitment for strengthening the cooperation in the field of European affairs during the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council; the results of the Romanian Presidency were commended.
The talks also focused on the future EU Strategic Agenda 2019-2024; this key topic for reflection concerning the future of the EU was also included on the agenda of the Informal Meeting of Ministers and State Secretaries for European Affairs, held in Bucharest. The discussions also underlined the joint support for conveying a message of unity and cohesion in the EU at the informal Sibiu Summit concerning the future of the Union and the need to establish consensually agreed priorities for the future. Such a pro-European commitment is essential, including from the perspective of the upcoming European elections in May this year, and of their impact on the new institutional configuration in Europe, as well as in the context of the challenges entailed by the Brexit process.
The talks also addressed the importance of common European values.
The meetings with the two officials confirmed the fact that the enlargement policy remains essential for the security, stability and prosperity of the entire European continent, and that it is important to maintain the support for the reform efforts of the candidate states, so as to multiply success stories in the region. Furthermore, the talks highlighted the fact that the EU needs to convey a constructive message of commitment for advancing this process, based on the existing framework and on the progress made by partners, following the principle of own merits.
With respect to the Multiannual Financial Framework, the Romanian official emphasised that it is important to reach an agreement in the autumn of 2019 and reiterated the commitment of the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council to maintain a fast pace of negotiations, so as to advance towards the goal of adopting a decision on the future European budget.
