Aerodynamic lorry cabs to be rolled out from September 2020 – Council approves provisional deal

Safer and more energy-efficient lorry cabs may enter the market from as early as 1 September 2020. Today, the Council’s Permanent Representatives Committee confirmed the provisional agreement between the Romanian presidency and the European Parliament on amending the directive on the maximum length of lorries to bring forward the introduction of longer, aerodynamic cabs. The rounded front of the cabin will significantly cut down fuel consumption and improve safety.

Before aerodynamic cabs can be placed on the market, they must meet the necessary type-approval requirements. These type-approval requirements are to be in place by 1 November 2019.

A formal vote in both Parliament and the Council will follow at a later date, with the aim of concluding this proposal during the Parliament’s current term.
