Before the presentation of priorities of the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council in front of the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament (January 23rd, 2019), Tudorel Toader, Minister of Justice, had a meeting with Claude Moraes, Chair of the aforementioned committee, on January 22nd, 2019.
The Romanian Minister of Justice expressed the goal of a close collaboration between the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council and the European Parliament in pending legislative files. Among other things, the priority given to legislative proposals on electronic evidence in criminal matters, the operationalization of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) and the improvement of mutual trust and mutual recognition in criminal matters were highlighted.
Regarding the operationalization of EPPO, the Minister of Justice emphasized the importance of the collaboration between the Council and the European Parliament for the appointment of the European Chief Prosecutor in the current parliamentary term. Regarding the appointment of European prosecutors, he expressed confidence that the timetable will be respected, – and candidates will be nominated until the end of March 2019.
The Chair of the LIBE Committee has expressed full confidence in Romania’s ability to achieve its justice objectives during the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In addition, the European Official expressed the support of the European Parliament in order to complete as many legislative files as possible before the European legislative elections.
